Computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
Just going with the flow…
Air dispersion modelling is a valuable tool for simulating how air pollutants will disperse in the ambient atmosphere. In some areas, however, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) may also be useful.
CFD predicts how a fluid will flow in a given situation. It can help us to model airflow and pollutant dispersion in unstable atmospheric conditions, or where there is localised turbulence due to buildings, for example. Sophisticated CFD modelling software is used to calculate properties such as flow patterns, pressure losses and temperature distribution, which are then used to predict how air pollutants will behave.
How can we help?
Our CFD models can help us determine whether pollutant emissions from an existing or proposed facility comply with the relevant standards. They can also help us to design effective control strategies to reduce emissions of any harmful air pollutants.
CFD is just one element of our holistic approach to evaluating the dispersion of odour and traditional pollutants. It has numerous applications in this field, including:
- close-range modelling in adverse situations
- designing and optimising heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems
- designing and optimising industrial extraction systems.
