Toon Van Elst

Toon Van Elst, managing director PRG Odournet NV
Toon van Elst is the senior consultant and managing director of PRG Odournet NV.

He was born in Belgium in 1970. He graduated as an environmental engineer at the University of Ghent in 1994. He then joined the laboratory of Organic Chemistry at this University to carry out research contracts for industries that aimed to resolve odour annoyance issues. He specialised in the chemical point perspective on solving odour problems and gained some very specific experience in gas chromatography and mass-spectrometry.

During his academic and consultancy career, Toon Van Elst acquired a detailed understanding of all issues relating to odour assessment and management in various types of industries. He has been particularly involved in odour issues from wastewater treatment, food processing, domestic waste processing, manure processing, intensive livestock farming, composting processes (VFG waste, green waste, mushroom compost), petroleum refining, non-ferrous metal industry, breweries, etc.

In the process of delivering these projects over these years, he gained direct experience in providing consultancy and advice, including emission and immission measurements, exposure assessment, ambient air measurements, dispersion model calculations, ventilation specification and abatement technique advice and selection for a very broad range of industries.

The Flemish minister of Environmental affairs granted him the official authorisation to act as an expert in the domain of ‘air’, in 1999.

In addition to consultancy work for industry, Toon completed some major odour related projects for the Flemish environmental agency, Aminal. These projects involved integrated odour auditing for industrial areas with different odour sources, a large enquiry to determine the percentage of odour nuisance in Flanders, the preparation of specific odour standards for some defined prioritary sectors of industry, a procedure for handling odour complaints and finally the influence of cumulation of odour on the perceived nuisance.
