Odour character assessment
The odour character assessment aims to identify whether the
odours generated from different stages of a production process/
different industrial sources are significantly different in
character (and hence may warrant separate treatment in determining
impacts).
The character assessment can be performed either by identification
of specific descriptors to define the odours (using ‘odour
wheel’ techniques), or by application of standard triangular
testing techniques (ISO Standard 4120: 1983. Sensory analysis
– Methodology – Triangular test) to identity whether
the differences in character are sufficient for a member of
the public to be able to differentiate between odour sources
at perception concentrations. This later approach is particularly
useful when investigating the potential influence of multiple
sources in terms of impact.
