Advice on odour control and abatement

Odournet has over 20 years experience in measurement and assessment of odorous emissions. This experience enables us to provide informed and independent advice on the appropriateness of odour abatement and control techniques and technologies for the full range of industrial and agricultural activities. Advice can range from identification of techniques to minimise odour generation at source, identification of suitable end-of-pipe techniques to control specific odorous species, sector-specific advice on best practice, and development of comprehensive odour management plans to minimise the impact of activities on surrounding communities.

Choice of odour abatement technique
Identification of the most appropriate odour abatement technique is the most important consideration when attempting to minimise the impact of an odorous process or facility. Considering the range of techniques and technology currently available, independent advice can be invaluable in identifying the most cost effective solution to a particular problem.

Sector-specific guidance and determination of BPM/ BAT
Specific industrial or agricultural sectors often have very specific requirements in terms of odour control or abatement technologies. Odournet has considerable experience in the development of sector specific abatement advice, both in Europe and the UK, and has been responsible for the preparation of guidance for a range of industries including intensive agriculture, tanneries, wastewater treatment, mushroom composting, composting, etc.
The initial stage of a sector specific review aims to identify the characteristics of the odours released from the activity, so that appropriate solutions can be identified. Information is drawn from sources within the UK and across Europe to ensure that the review reflects the current state of play. Potential or forthcoming changes in National, European or International legislation can also be identified to ensure that advice is as future proof as possible.

Odour management plans
Although prevention of generation of odours at source is the preferred approach to minimising odour impacts, in reality, effective odour management often relies on a combination of end of pipe treatment techniques and operational procedures. Failure of any one of these techniques can lead to undesirable impacts, which may elicit complaints. The risk of such occurrences can be significantly reduced by preparation of process or site-specific ‘Odour Management’ plans. These aim to identify all potential sources of odour release during normal and abnormal operational conditions and ensure that suitable procedures or controls are in place to minimise odour release.

Performance of abatement plant
Once an appropriate technology has been identified, it is then important to ensure that the system is designed and operated correctly to ensure the optimal treatment levels are achieved. This involves consideration of factors such as the odour loading levels (and potential changes in these levels), process monitoring, maintenance issues, etc.
Odournet has extensive experience in a wide range of abatement and control techniques and can provide specific advice of best practice to ensure that the required odour treatment is achieved and maintained.
